Today my dh and I did something we talk about often, but don't do often enough. We brought out hot beverages outdoors to the front porch, sat, and talked. We are fortunate to live in a secluded area, and you cannot see our house in any detail from the road. We could be sitting there in our pajamas - or less - and no one would have any idea. He decided to hang his father's binoculars on one of the front posts. That way, they'd be there when the birds come to our bird bath and feeder. I watched an amazing little brown bird with a white breast flit between the two provisions like she couldn't make up her mind which one was better. We talked about the dead trees on the property and I explained what a bottle tree was to him. I don't think he was picturing it too well. We agreed that we had both changed radically, and he remarked that it was because we are in a different season now. We are, and we both like it. These years could never mean golfing everyday for him, and stalking the malls for me. But we are both a bit surprised about who we became... two people who love to watch the birds and all the other incredible creatures around us. Even the frogs and lizards. The menangerie of animals is growing - we have a duck who comes over and hangs in our yard now. The duck and the outdoor cat, Target, get along well now. They didn't at first. Even the deer seem to be semi-domesticated, not running off in fear when approached. Yesterday, we had Cinnamon, our Yorkie-Pom ourdoors with us, when he began to bark. He was barking at a tiny little squirrel at the base of a tree. Where did he come from? Did he fall out of a nest? Did he get separated from his family? He persued us. He actually chased after us and got on my dh's shoe, tried to climb up his leg. DH went into the house and the little creature began to climb up the door after him! We realized he was too tiny and young to leave by himself, so we brought him inside. I called the vet to get instructions for feeding him. We made him a bed with old tee shirts and towels. He is totally affectionate, wants to cuddle and be petted. He also mostly wants to sleep. He burrows under the bedcloths until he is 100% hidden, curls up in a fetal position and sleeps. He sleeps deeply like a newborn - he is actually hard to wake up sometimes. So precious, and not the least bit afraid! Tomorrow DH is calling a wildlife specialist to make sure things are done right so the little thing can acclamate back into the wild when it's time.
